Shopify Editions Fall '26 “Exponential”: what's new and what it means for your store

Shopify has released its Fall 2026 Edition, called “Exponential”, with more than 150 updates. We read the whole thing and summarized it block by block, with what actually changes for a store selling in Europe and what is still on its way.

By Marcos Balmain, founder of Weblineo

What Shopify Editions Fall '26 is and why it is called Exponential

Shopify Editions is the twice-yearly showcase where Shopify brings together everything it has launched or is about to launch. The Fall 2026 Edition is framed around “nonlinear growth”, and the idea is clear: a store should be able to sell in more places at once (AI agents, Google, Shop, physical retail) without multiplying the work of whoever runs it.

Shopify backs the Edition with three figures of its own: more than one billion products in its catalog are discoverable through AI channels, Shop Pay has passed 400 million accounts (as of September 30, 2026) and Shopify Payments blocks more than 12,000 high-risk payments per minute.

The updates are grouped into eleven blocks: agentic, Sidekick, online store, products, retail, payments, operations, Shop, marketing, fulfillment and developers. Some are already live, others are “coming soon” and several depend on your country or plan, so it is worth reading them carefully before changing anything in your store.

Agentic commerce: selling in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google

This is the heaviest block. Shopify wants a store's products to show up and be purchasable inside AI assistants, with Shopify's checkout behind them. To do that it expands Shopify Catalog, the product database those agents query, and adds new channels.

For a brand, the practical consequence is that product data quality (titles, categories, variants, metafields, policies) now decides whether an agent recommends you or not. Shopify adds a Catalog eligibility check that tells you whether your store qualifies and what to change.

One important caveat: according to the Shopify Help Center, selling through ChatGPT currently requires selling to customers in the United States, and Google AI Mode and Gemini to customers in the US, Canada or Australia. A store that only sells in Europe does not qualify yet, but it is worth getting product data ready now.

  • Selling in Google Search, including AI Mode, and in the Gemini app with Shopify checkout
  • A Shop skill so ChatGPT, Claude and other agents can discover products and pay with Shop Pay
  • Shop Pay in more agents, plus connectors for Grok, Gemini, Meta Muse and Microsoft Copilot
  • Compare-at (sale) prices visible to agents through Shopify Catalog
  • AI channel knowledge base: you review and approve the business information, policies and FAQs shared with agents
  • Agents can direct shoppers to your nearest physical location

Sidekick goes from chat to doing the work

Sidekick, the AI assistant in the admin, can now handle longer jobs: multi-step workflows, batch changes, calculations, scheduling and web search. You approve one plan and Sidekick applies every change, for example rewriting the descriptions across a whole collection.

It also appears as a floating chat in the redesigned admin, suggests next steps when you open your store and learns from Markdown files where you describe your theme and preferences. It can create and edit draft orders, explain payment changes and chargebacks, and give pricing advice with Shopify Smart Pricing. Shopify also says it will create checkout customizations with the editor and Checkout Blocks, although its Help Center currently says that in the checkout editor it only guides you and does not save changes.

Our take: it is real help for day-to-day work, but every batch change deserves a review before you approve it, and it does not replace custom development of sections, integrations or performance work.

Online store: Canvas, Rollouts and SimGym

Store design is now edited in a single view with Canvas, with Sidekick's help, and the online store page has been redesigned so you manage themes, domains and launch from one place.

For anyone preparing campaigns, the most useful update is Rollouts: it bundles theme, checkout, catalog and discount changes into one scheduled release. It comes with scheduled tests (including A/B tests across headless, POS, Google Shopping and the Shop app), discounts that launch alongside those changes, and per-market price or listing schedules that revert automatically when they end.

  • SimGym: shopping simulations with a defined purchase goal to test improvements
  • Predictive search with better suggestions as shoppers type
  • Right-to-left languages: Arabic, Hebrew and Urdu
  • Translate & Adapt keeps translations up to date automatically
  • B2B search with Algolia that shows each buyer only their catalog and negotiated prices
  • Carts synced across devices for shoppers with a Shop account

Products and catalog: variants, collections and barcodes

Product management gets simpler: products and variants are edited on one page with bulk controls, and collections can combine products, apps and variants from different sources. You can also map product data per sales channel and keep it in sync.

Each variant supports up to 20 barcodes that can be scanned in POS, and digital products can also be sold as access to a URL (templates or bookings) with the upgraded Digital Products app. Shopify lists a per-market cart preview as coming soon, to check pricing, availability and payments.

Checkout and payments: fraud, chargebacks and a more compact checkout

Shopify Protect now blocks fraud before the order is created, uses AI to help with disputes and supports your own risk rules that you can backtest (parts of this are coming soon). “Not received” disputes automatically attach the carrier's proof of delivery, and responses are generated for each bank and reason code.

In checkout, Shopify lists as coming soon custom fields (text, dates, checkboxes and lists), a tile layout for payment methods, a more compact form with clearer errors, an animated transition to the order confirmation and paying with Apple Pay from other browsers by scanning a QR code.

Mind the fine print: Managed Tax, order-origin tax, HSA/FSA funds and the authorization improvements are for the United States. For Europe the highlights are MB WAY (useful if you sell in Portugal), adding Shop Pay and local methods even when you use a third-party payment provider, and payments across multiple legal entities.

Physical retail with Shopify POS

POS recognizes more returning customers, takes cash and split payments with fewer taps, and searches products, orders, customers and drafts with filters. Any staff member can resume a sale started by someone else and open a known customer's abandoned online cart.

  • Customizable receipt templates with built-in tax summaries for the EU, UK and Canada
  • Local delivery offered at checkout and managed from POS
  • Scheduled inventory counts by item, location and deadline
  • Activity log per staff member: refunds, discounts and drawer opens
  • POS and admin users managed together, with bulk accounts via CSV
  • New in-store methods such as Satispay, Scalapay and Alipay

Operations, marketing and shipping

The admin gets passkeys, unified search, folders for files, inline metafield editing from any page and automatically generated policies that stay in sync. Thirteen more admin languages arrive, including Catalan, Basque and Galician, and Shopify lists a filterable activity log and cleaner navigation as coming soon.

Shopify Flow adds triggers for price, tag and metafield changes, permissions over who edits each automation, version history and building workflows with AI. Marketing gets WhatsApp consent at checkout and automated messages to recover carts, searches and checkouts, a ready-made Black Friday email series to customize and schedule, and TikTok Buy Direct for select businesses.

In fulfillment, you can buy DHL Express labels in Spain, the UK, France, Italy and Germany, set shipping and return rules per market, add discounts to existing orders with automatic recalculation and recalculate taxes when the address changes. The Shop Promise badge signals reliable delivery and returns and ranks products higher in Shop and Shopify Catalog.

Developers and themes: what to review before 2027

This block is less flashy but it is the one that can create the most work. Apps can no longer create or update script tags and must move to theme app extensions or web pixels, and they must migrate to expiring offline access tokens before January 2027. If your store relies on an old app or a private integration, check it now.

Shopify also introduces a new theme architecture in Liquid with blocks, typed contracts, partial updates, Markdown guides for agents and built-in Tailwind styles, and now serves each store only the CSS it needs. On the headless side, Hydrogen supports production stores with customer accounts and predictive search, one-click deployment to Vercel and a Next.js template called Vercel Shop.

  • Review which installed apps still use script tags
  • Ask whoever maintains your private integrations about expiring tokens
  • Check that tracking (pixels and analytics) works with web pixels
  • Consider whether your current theme benefits from the new architecture

Where we would start

With this many updates, prioritizing is the sensible move. In the stores we work with we would start with what protects revenue and what has a deadline: reviewing script tags and tokens, and the product data that AI agents and Google read. Then Rollouts to prepare campaigns without surprises, and WhatsApp consent if your customers buy on mobile.

At Weblineo we work only with Shopify and we build in code, with no templates. If you want us to review what this Edition brings to your store and apply it at a fixed price with training included, tell us about your project.

  • Audit apps using script tags and integrations with old tokens
  • Complete catalog categories, variants, metafields and policies
  • Pass the Shopify Catalog eligibility check
  • Schedule campaigns with Rollouts and scheduled discounts
  • Turn on WhatsApp consent and recovery automations

Frequently asked questions

What is Shopify Editions?

It is the showcase Shopify publishes twice a year with every platform update. The Fall 2026 Edition is called “Exponential” and includes more than 150 updates.

Are all Shopify Editions Fall '26 features available in Europe?

No. Some are marked as coming soon and others only work in the United States, such as Managed Tax or HSA/FSA funds. Check each feature in the Shopify Help Center before you plan around it.

Do I need to change anything in my store because of this Edition?

The most urgent item is checking whether any app or integration uses script tags or non-expiring access tokens, because Shopify requires migrating them before January 2027. The rest are optional improvements.

How does my Shopify store show up in ChatGPT or Gemini?

Shopify connects your catalog to those agents through Shopify Catalog. Today it requires selling to customers in the United States (and, for Google, also Canada or Australia). After that, what matters most is complete product data and passing the Catalog eligibility check.
