Shopify Sidekick in 2026: what it is, what it can do and where it does not replace a developer

Sidekick is the AI assistant built into the Shopify admin, and with Editions Fall '26 it has moved from answering questions to preparing and running multi-step changes. Here is what it can do today according to Shopify's documentation, how to review its proposals without putting your store at risk, and which jobs still need a developer.

By Marcos Balmain, founder of Weblineo

What Sidekick is and what changes in Editions Fall '26

Sidekick is Shopify's AI commerce assistant. It works with your store data, understands plain-language instructions and can carry out technical tasks from the admin itself. According to Shopify, it is included in your plan, although features and usage limits vary by plan, and every staff member uses it with their own permissions: it only sees what that person can see.

In Editions Fall '26 Shopify presents it as an assistant that handles complex workflows: it prepares several changes at once, calculates, schedules tasks and searches the web. Shopify also says it understands your business better, including the apps you have installed, and remembers your instructions so you do not have to repeat them.

On language, the Sidekick page says it adapts to your store language settings and can help you in multiple languages. Shopify does not publish a fixed list of languages or countries, so it is worth checking in your own admin which features are active for you.

Multi-step plans and batch changes

The most useful change for daily work is planning. You ask for something large, Sidekick drafts a plan, you approve it once and it applies several changes together. Shopify's example is editing the descriptions of every product in a collection. Longer tasks keep running if you close the chat or leave the page, and Sidekick notifies you when they are ready for review.

Store changes are not published directly. Sidekick saves them as drafts in a store changes card, and your live store does not change until you review and publish them. Each change type is reviewed separately, a set holds up to 50 changes and drafts expire 10 days after the latest update.

One important detail: once published, changes are not automatically undone. You have to ask Sidekick to reverse them, then review and publish again. This store changes review is also not available in the Shopify app, only on desktop or in a mobile browser.

  • Edit descriptions, titles or tags across many products at once
  • Create or update products, discounts, collections and customers
  • Build Shopify Flow workflows that you review and turn on
  • Write and run code to forecast or compare your store data
  • Save instructions as skills to reuse them

Orders, pricing and payments: tasks you can delegate

Sidekick can create and edit draft orders with discounts, shipping rates, taxes, addresses and tags. Changes are highlighted and the draft is only saved when you click Save. On existing orders it can add items, change quantities and manage discounts, but nothing applies until you click Update order.

If you have the Shopify Smart Pricing app installed, you can ask about your pricing strategy and get one price tip per product that follows your guardrails and rounding rules. It is a suggestion, not an automatic change: the decision stays with you.

With Shopify Payments it answers questions such as why a payout was lower, breaking down charges, refunds, fees and reserved funds, or what is driving your chargebacks. The limits are clear too: it cannot release reserves, remove account holds or change payout details. On VAT it gives general information and links to tax settings, but it does not decide whether you owe it.

Recommendations with SimGym and the new floating chat

SimGym is a Shopify app that tests your store with AI shoppers before you publish theme changes: they browse, view products, add to cart and describe their experience. Sidekick turns that feedback into concrete changes you can apply. Shopify warns that results might differ from how your real customers behave, and SimGym does not support headless or Hydrogen storefronts.

Sidekick also offers growth guidance that considers the apps you use and web research on your industry and market. When you open the redesigned admin you see recommendations and next steps laid out, and you can talk to Sidekick from a floating chat interface with the context of the page you are on. According to Editions, this access is coming soon to every admin page.

Treat it as a prioritised list of ideas, not a verdict. A recommendation tested with simulated shoppers is a good hypothesis, but validate it against your own conversion data before redesigning a key page.

Themes, Canvas, Markdown files and checkout

In the theme editor, Sidekick changes global and section settings, adds, moves or hides sections and blocks your theme already includes, and toggles app embeds. Changes only apply when saved. In Canvas, Shopify's new design surface, it goes further: it works on the theme files, can build blocks the theme does not include and redesign templates. Shopify says Canvas is early and is not replacing the existing editor yet.

To help Sidekick understand your theme, Shopify supports two optional Markdown files at the theme root: AGENTS.md, describing the architecture and conventions, and DESIGN.md, recording your design intent. Sidekick in Canvas reads them before changing the theme and can update DESIGN.md when you ask for style changes. Buyers never see them, and each file can be up to 50 KB.

Editions Fall '26 also announces Sidekick help to create and optimise customisations in the checkout and accounts editor and in the Checkout Blocks app. Watch the scope: Shopify's help page on the checkout editor says Sidekick answers questions, finds app blocks and explains how to make each change, but does not edit, save or publish the configuration. That part is still yours.

For print-on-demand you can upload or generate a design with Sidekick, preview it on a product and publish it through Printful. Shopify notes that custom product creation is in early access and is not available to all stores.

How to review Sidekick's changes safely

Sidekick presents changes for your review before applying them, but reviewing them properly is your job. What prevents most problems is treating every plan as if a new team member handed it to you: read what it will touch, check a sample and only then publish.

For themes the rule is simple: avoid testing on the live theme. Duplicate the theme before asking for design changes, work on the copy and compare. If you use Shopify CLI or the GitHub integration, you also get a history of every file, including AGENTS.md and DESIGN.md.

  • Read the full plan before approving it and discard changes you do not want
  • Duplicate the theme before design changes and test on the copy
  • Check a sample of products after a batch edit
  • Check the result on mobile and desktop before publishing
  • Limit what each staff member can do through permissions
  • Remember published changes do not undo themselves: request and review a reversal

Where Sidekick does not replace a developer

Sidekick is very good at admin tasks and at changes within what your theme already allows. The limit appears when the work means designing how something behaves, not just configuring it. A complex section driven by metafields and metaobjects, a product page with its own logic or a cart with specific rules needs code reviewed by someone who understands the whole theme, even if Canvas can produce a first draft.

Integrations are another clear case: connecting Shopify to an ERP, a warehouse system or a CRM involves APIs, webhooks, error handling and testing with real data. Performance is the same: cutting app JavaScript, optimising images and Liquid or improving Core Web Vitals takes measuring, changing and measuring again with judgement.

Finally, checkout. Sidekick can guide you in the checkout editor, but advanced customisations with Checkout UI Extensions or Shopify Functions are still development work. AI speeds things up; responsibility for a store that works, loads fast and sells is still human.

How Weblineo can help

Weblineo has worked only with Shopify since 2016 and is a Shopify Plus Partner. We do the work Sidekick does not cover: custom sections and themes with no templates, integrations and performance optimisation, with a fixed price in every proposal.

We also prepare your theme to work with Sidekick, for example with an AGENTS.md and a DESIGN.md that describe its structure clearly, and training is included so your team knows what to delegate to AI and how to review what it proposes.

Frequently asked questions

Does Sidekick cost extra?

According to Shopify, Sidekick is included in your plan, although features and usage limits vary by plan. Some related tools, such as SimGym, have a monthly simulation allowance and charge for additional runs.

Can Sidekick break my store?

Store changes are saved as drafts and are not published until you review them. The risk is approving without reviewing: published changes are not undone automatically, so duplicate your theme before design changes and review every plan.

Does Sidekick work in languages other than English?

Shopify says it adapts to your store language settings and can help you in multiple languages. There is no public, fixed list of supported languages per feature.

Can Sidekick customise my checkout?

In the checkout editor it answers questions, finds app blocks and explains how to make changes, but it does not edit or publish the configuration. Advanced customisations with extensions or Shopify Functions still need development.
