Custom Shopify development

We write your theme, sections and integrations in code, on Online Store 2.0. Everything stays editable from the Shopify theme editor, so your team changes text, images and blocks without calling us.

This is for you if…

  • Your current theme can't do what you need
  • You pay for several apps that do things code could handle
  • You need to connect Shopify to your ERP, logistics or CRM

What we build

From a single section to a full theme, always on the same foundation: our own lightweight, documented code.

  • Custom themes on Online Store 2.0
  • Editable sections and blocks for any template
  • Metafields and metaobjects for product details, size charts or spec sheets
  • Custom apps and Admin API integrations

Integrations

We connect Shopify to what you already use: ERP, warehouse and carriers, payment gateways, email marketing and analytics. If a solid app exists, we recommend it; if not, we build it.

Performance and Core Web Vitals

Fewer apps means less third-party JavaScript. We load only what each template needs, serve images at the right size and measure LCP, INP and CLS before launch.

Custom theme or Theme Store theme?

A paid theme works if your store fits it. When you have to force it with apps and patches, a custom theme ends up faster, cheaper to maintain and easier to edit. On the call we tell you honestly which one suits you.

What a Shopify development project with us looks like

  1. Technical analysis

We review your store, your apps and what you need to connect. We separate what Shopify handles out of the box, what a reliable app covers and what is worth coding.

  2. Fixed proposal

Scope, price and date in writing: which sections, which integrations and what is out of scope.

  3. Development on a test store

We work on a copy of the theme or a development store, without touching the store that's selling.

  4. V1 review

We pause so you can test it with your real products, and we make the changes you want.

  5. Launch and training

We launch, measure performance and show you how to edit every section from the theme editor.

A guide to custom Shopify development

What you should know before commissioning a theme, a set of sections or an integration on Shopify.

What a custom Shopify theme is

A custom theme is a Shopify theme written for one specific store: its catalog, the way it sells and its brand. It's coded in Liquid, Shopify's templating language, with its own HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and built on Online Store 2.0, the architecture that allows sections on every page and editable JSON templates.

The difference from a Theme Store theme isn't the technology but the starting point. A purchased theme is built for thousands of different stores and ships with options you'll never use; a custom one includes only what your store needs, which is why it's lighter and easier to maintain.

Sections, blocks and metafields: a store your team can edit

Each part of the store is coded as a section with its own blocks and settings, so your team can add it, move it or change its text and images from the theme editor without touching code.

For information that changes from one product to the next, we use metafields and metaobjects: size charts, spec sheets, ingredients, product-specific FAQs or brand blocks. They're filled in once in the Shopify admin and the theme shows them only where they belong.

  • Reusable sections on any template
  • Metafields for product and collection data
  • Metaobjects for structured content (stores, designers, guides)
  • Alternate templates for special products or collections

Paid apps or your own code

Many stores pile up monthly-fee apps for things that can be coded into the theme: a bundle selector, a free shipping bar, a mega menu or a size chart. Each app adds cost and, often, third-party JavaScript that slows down loading.

We're not against apps: for reviews, subscriptions or invoicing there are usually solid options, and we recommend them. What we do is review each one and suggest what to keep, what to replace with our own code and what to remove.

ERP, logistics and CRM integrations

We connect Shopify to the rest of your business through the Admin API and Shopify webhooks: stock and orders with your ERP, shipping with your warehouse or carrier, customers with your CRM or email marketing tool.

For internal automations we use Shopify Flow, which is included in Shopify's paid plans, and we only build a custom app when the integration calls for it. Everything is documented and stays in your account.

  • The code is yours

The theme and integrations live in your Shopify account from day one. Everything documented and editable from the theme editor.

Frequently asked questions

What clients ask us most about custom Shopify development.

Do you build on Dawn or another base theme?

It depends on the project. Sometimes we start from Dawn, Shopify's reference theme, and other times we write the theme from scratch. Either way, the code is ours and built for your store.

Will I be able to edit the store myself?

Yes. Everything we build is configured from the Shopify theme editor, and training is included so you know how to do it.

Who owns the code?

You do. The theme and integrations stay in your Shopify account and are yours from day one.

Do you build headless stores with Hydrogen?

Only when it truly adds something. For most brands, a well-built theme is faster to launch, cheaper to maintain and just as fast.

How much does a custom Shopify store cost?

It depends on the scope: a single section is not the same as a full theme with integrations. After the video call we send you a proposal with a fixed price in writing, with no hidden costs.

Can I keep using my current apps?

Yes. We review the ones you have and suggest which to keep. Those that stay installed will work the same on the new theme.

What happens when Shopify updates something?

Online Store 2.0 themes keep working through Shopify updates. If anything ever needs adapting, we handle it under maintenance or as a one-off job.

How long does it take to build a custom theme?

It depends on the number of templates and integrations. The launch date is written into the proposal, and we stop at V1 to review it with you before we finish.

Will my store stop selling while you build?

No. We work on a copy of the theme or a development store and launch once everything has been reviewed.

Do you use third-party apps?

Only when they add something that isn't worth coding, like reviews or subscriptions. Whatever can be solved in the theme, we code, with no monthly fees.

What if I want to add something new later?

Since the code is documented and yours, it can be extended at any time: with us, with a maintenance plan or with another developer.
