Shopify store design for sports and outdoor brands

A sports store usually has a large catalog, lots of sizes and constant season changes, and it often sells to individual shoppers and clubs at the same time. We build your Shopify store so customers find what they're looking for fast, seasons change without rebuilding the store and clubs order their team kits on their own terms.

This is for you if…

  • Your catalog is large and customers can't find what they're looking for
  • Every season change forces you to rebuild collections by hand
  • You sell team kits to clubs and manage it all by email
  • You personalize with names, numbers or crests

What we solve in a sports store

The Shopify building blocks for a large catalog and a mixed audience.

  • Filters by sport, size, brand and performance features
  • Automated collections by season
  • B2B for clubs and schools
  • Personalization with name and number
  • In-store sales with POS

Large catalogs with good filters

With the Search & Discovery app, collections filter by size, color, brand, price, availability and any metafields we define, such as sport, level, terrain or waterproofing. That way a collection of hundreds of products narrows down to a handful with two taps on mobile.

Seasons without rebuilding the store

Automated collections fill themselves based on conditions, such as a season tag or a product type. Change the tag and the collection updates. With Shopify Flow you can automate season change tasks, like tagging sale products or hiding sold-out items.

Clubs, team kits and personalization

With B2B on Shopify each club has its own account, its own catalog with its kit and its own prices: up to 3 catalogs on Basic, Grow and Advanced and unlimited on Plus. Personalization with name, number or bib is collected on the product page with line item properties and reaches the order ready for production.

Guide to selling sports gear on Shopify

How to organize a large sports catalog on Shopify and serve individual shoppers and clubs at the same time.

Structuring a sports catalog

A sports catalog is browsed along several paths at once: by sport, by product type, by brand and by profile, such as men, women or kids. Shopify doesn't nest collections, so that hierarchy is built with the menu and automated collections based on conditions.

Technical data, such as membrane, a running shoe's drop or comfort temperature, goes in metafields. It is shown on the product page as a table and used as a filter.

  • Collections by sport and by type
  • Menu with the navigation hierarchy
  • Metafields for technical features
  • Filters by size, brand and features

Sizing in a multi-brand catalog

Every brand sizes differently. We create size guides as metaobjects, one per brand or product type, and each product page shows its own next to the selector.

Shopify works with up to three options per product, usually size, color and, for some products, width or length. With the availability filter, customers can see only what is in stock in their size.

Season changes and outlet

Seasons are managed with tags or metafields and automated collections that depend on them. When the season changes you don't rebuild collections: you change the data and the store reorganizes itself.

Shopify Flow, free on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus, can move products to the outlet, alert you about low stock or hide sold-out variants based on the rules we agree on.

Orders from clubs and schools

Clubs buy differently: many units, several sizes, personalization and sometimes deferred payment. With B2B on Shopify each club has its own company account and a catalog with its kit, its prices and its payment terms.

For club members who buy on their own, we can build a club page with their kit, linked only for them, and personalization with name and number through line item properties.

Frequently asked questions

What clients ask us most about Shopify store for sports.

Can I filter by sport or technical features?

Yes. We store that data in metafields and turn it into filters with the Search & Discovery app.

Can clubs have their own store?

They can have their own B2B account with their catalog and prices inside your store. If each club needs its own page for members to buy from, we build that too.

How are the jersey name and number collected?

With line item properties on the product page: the customer types the name and number, and they appear in the cart and in the order.

Can it connect to my physical store's stock?

Yes. With Shopify POS you share catalog and inventory. If your stock lives in an ERP, we look at the integration.

Can you integrate my ERP or my stock supplier?

Yes, we scope it in the proposal. Shopify has connectors for many ERPs, and if one doesn't exist, the integration can be custom-coded.

Can I sell bikes or large products?

Yes, with a dedicated shipping profile for bulky products and rates by weight or order value.

Can I have different prices for each club?

Yes. With B2B on Shopify each company has its own catalog with its own prices. Basic, Grow and Advanced allow up to 3 catalogs; Plus has no limit.

Can you help me sell to other countries?

We set up Shopify Markets so you can sell abroad with language, currency and prices per market from the same store.
