How to sell with Shopify in ChatGPT, Gemini and other AI agents

Shopify has spent several Editions getting stores ready for AI agents that find products, answer questions and take payment. Editions Fall '26 goes further with Shopify Catalog, Shop Pay inside agents and selling in Google AI Mode and Gemini. Here is what exists, where it is available and what to get ready now.

What agentic commerce is and why it matters for your Shopify store

Agentic commerce is when a shopper does not browse your site but asks an AI assistant to search, compare and, more and more often, buy on their behalf. The agent reads structured data about products, prices, stock and policies, and shows the result inside the chat.

To show up in those answers, the agent needs reliable, machine-readable data. Shopify handles this with what it calls agentic storefronts: your products are shared with AI channels through Shopify Catalog, and you manage orders from the same admin you already use.

According to Shopify, more than a billion products in its catalog can already be discovered through AI channels. The practical takeaway is simple: the quality of your catalog data now matters as much as the design of your product page.

What Shopify announced in Editions Fall '26 for AI agents

The fall 2026 Edition groups a long list of updates around agents. These are the ones that matter most to a direct-to-consumer merchant. Some are aimed at developers, others are switched on from the admin without code.

Shopify also reports more than 400 million buyers with a Shop Pay account, as of September 30, 2026. That base is what makes one-tap payment inside an agent attractive.

  • Selling in Google Search, including AI Mode and the Gemini app, with Shopify checkout and orders in your admin.
  • A Shop skill for agents such as ChatGPT or Claude: product discovery, recommendations and Shop Pay payment.
  • Shop Pay inside agents with Mastercard and Visa; Amex is listed as coming soon.
  • Compare-at prices sent to agents through Shopify Catalog to show discounts with no extra setup.
  • A Shopify Catalog eligibility check that tells you what to change to meet the requirements.
  • An AI channel knowledge base to review and approve the information shared with agents.
  • Location discovery: agents can point shoppers to your nearest physical store.

Shopify Catalog: requirements for agents to see your products

Shopify Catalog is the source AI channels such as ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot draw from: it sends title, description, options, images, price, availability and other attributes, and updates continuously. For Google AI Mode and Gemini, products arrive through the Google & YouTube channel or Google Merchant Center. Everything is managed under Sales channels > Agentic, active by default for eligible stores once you accept supplemental terms.

Eligibility works at two levels. At store level, Shopify asks for the Starter plan or higher, a store that is not password protected, in development mode or B2B-only, a verified account with two-step authentication, and a healthy history of genuine sales, on-time fulfillment and a low chargeback rate. Eligibility is reviewed over time and can be lost.

At product level, each item needs a title, at least one image, a price above zero, an identifiable URL and publication on the online store, Hydrogen or Headless channels. Unlisted products or products hidden from search engines are left out. Some categories are excluded too, such as alcohol, tobacco and vaping, prescription and medical products, weapons, adult content, event tickets, services and uncategorized products.

To see where you stand, go to Sales channels > Agentic and check Shopify Catalog under Sources: you will see your product count, or an Ineligible warning with the reason.

Real availability by country: what works today and what does not

This is where honesty matters. According to Shopify's Help Center, your store can be based anywhere to sell on ChatGPT, but it must sell to customers in the United States. On ChatGPT the shopper buys through your own store checkout, opened in the app or in a new tab, and Shopify charges no ChatGPT-specific fees.

For Google AI Mode and Gemini you must sell to customers in the United States, Canada or Australia. Direct checkout inside Google is rolling out gradually and might not be in your store yet; shoppers without it can still find your products and are sent to your site. Subscription-only products, bundles, customizable products, local pickup and pickup points are not supported.

If you only sell in Spain or elsewhere in Europe, you will not meet those ChatGPT and Google requirements today. What you can do is make the store eligible and get your data in order, because Catalog also feeds Shop and other agents, and you will be ready as rollout reaches more markets. If you already sell to the US with Shopify Markets, the channel applies to you now.

What to prepare now: product data, metafields and policies

An agent does not see your design: it reads data. The more complete and accurate it is, the better it can answer a specific question about a size, a material or a delivery time. If that information lives in metafields or metaobjects, Shopify lets you map it on the Channel mapping page so it reaches the catalog, along with tag prefixes and title delimiters.

Check your compare-at prices as well. Since Fall '26 they are sent to agents to show discounts, and in the catalog settings you choose whether the list price is the current price or the compare-at price. If you use them loosely, they will now be visible in more places.

  • Run the Shopify Catalog eligibility check and fix the reasons it lists.
  • Assign Shopify's standard product category across the catalog; uncategorized products are excluded.
  • Write clear titles and descriptions, with any legal disclosures in the first 6,000 characters.
  • Group products that are really variants of another product into a single listing.
  • Complete your terms of service, privacy policy and return and refund policy under Settings > Policies.
  • Keep data consistent between Shopify and Google Merchant Center.

The AI channel knowledge base: policies and FAQs

Shoppers do not only ask about products: how long shipping takes, how returns work, which payment methods you accept. For that, Shopify offers a knowledge base under Sales channels > Agentic, which acts as the source of truth for agents answering questions about your store.

Facts are grouped into categories such as store details, brand, policies, contact, payment methods, returns and warranty, and you can add your own. Shopify scans your site and suggests updates, but it never changes content on your behalf: you approve and publish. It holds up to 1,000 facts, and the published content is publicly available through the Storefront MCP.

If you used the Shopify Knowledge Base app, Shopify says it is no longer sold and will be deprecated on January 15, 2027, replaced by this feature.

Universal Commerce Protocol and developer updates

The Universal Commerce Protocol, or UCP, is an open standard co-developed by Shopify and Google for connecting commerce with agents. It defines common operations for product discovery, checkout and post-purchase, with extensions for discounts, loyalty, subscriptions or delivery rules, and runs over REST, GraphQL, MCP and other transports.

In Fall '26 Shopify adds cart and checkout permalinks through the UCP /buy endpoint, an /ask endpoint that answers questions using what the store has published, and support for featuring physical locations. For headless stores, Hydrogen ships agent-ready commerce primitives.

For most stores this needs no custom development, since Shopify handles it. It is worth working on when you run a custom storefront, keep catalog data across external systems, or have integrations that must expose reliable information to agents.

How Weblineo helps get your store ready for agents

Weblineo has worked only with Shopify since 2016 and is a Shopify Plus Partner. Getting a store ready for agentic commerce is mostly data work: categories, metafields, metaobjects, channel mapping, policies and Merchant Center, plus a theme that reads that same structure.

We build with custom code, no templates, at a fixed price set in the proposal, and training is included so your team can keep the catalog in order on its own.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell on ChatGPT with a Shopify store based outside the US?

Yes, your store can be based anywhere, but according to Shopify's Help Center it must sell to customers in the United States and have products eligible for Shopify Catalog. The shopper pays in your own store checkout.

What do I need to sell in Google AI Mode and Gemini with Shopify?

Sell to customers in the US, Canada or Australia, have Catalog-eligible products, a valid Google Merchant Center account, complete policies and accept the supplemental terms. Direct checkout is rolling out gradually.

How do I check whether my products are eligible for Shopify Catalog?

In the admin, go to Sales channels > Agentic and check Shopify Catalog under Sources. Eligible stores see their product count; ineligible stores see a warning with the reason.

How do I remove a product from AI channels?

Set its status to Unlisted. That also removes it from sitemaps, Google and your store search. Blocking crawlers in robots.txt does not stop Catalog from sending your data.
