Your international, multilingual Shopify store

We get your Shopify store ready to sell in several countries with Shopify Markets: each market with its own language, currency, prices and domain or subfolder, all from a single admin. If your case calls for separate stores, we will tell you that too.

This is for you if…

  • You already get orders from outside Spain and the store isn't ready for them
  • You want to open Portugal, France or another market without duplicating work
  • You need different prices by country
  • Your store has half-finished or patched-together translations

What an international Shopify store includes

The Shopify building blocks for selling abroad, set up for your catalog.

  • Markets by country or region with Shopify Markets
  • Custom domains or subfolders by market
  • Local currencies and market pricing
  • Translations with Translate & Adapt
  • Shipping and rates by country

Domains or subfolders

Each market can live in a subfolder of the main domain, such as /pt or /fr, or on its own country domain. Subfolders concentrate authority on a single domain and are easier to maintain; country domains give a stronger local identity. Shopify adds hreflang tags so Google serves each country its own version.

Currencies and market pricing

Shopify converts prices to the local currency and lets you adjust them by market with a percentage or set fixed product prices through catalogs. Some local pricing features are only fully available with Shopify Payments, so we check this when planning the store.

Languages and content

We translate with Translate & Adapt, Shopify's app for translating and adapting content by market, or with whichever tool best fits your volume. The theme is set up so every text, menu and metafield has its own version.

A guide to selling in several countries with Shopify

How Shopify Markets works and what to decide before opening your store to other countries and languages.

How Shopify Markets works

A market in Shopify is a country or group of countries you sell to with its own settings: language, currency, prices, domain, shipping and payment methods. Everything is managed from the same admin, with one catalog and one inventory.

That lets you start with a test market, see how it responds and open the next one without building another store.

  • One market per country or region
  • Language and currency by market
  • Adjusted or fixed prices by market
  • Domain or subfolder by market

Subfolders, subdomains or country domains

Shopify lets each market use a subfolder of the main domain, a subdomain or its own domain. For most brands starting out, subfolders are the simplest option: one domain, one source of authority and less maintenance.

Country domains make sense when the brand is already known in that country under its own domain or when local identity carries a lot of weight. Either way, Shopify generates hreflang tags so each version is shown in its country.

Translations with Translate & Adapt

Translate & Adapt is Shopify's app for translating your store: products, collections, pages, menus, metafields and theme text. It also lets you adapt content to a specific market even when it shares a language with another, for example different copy for Spain and Mexico.

Machine translation is a good starting point, but the copy that sells, such as product pages and collection pages, should be reviewed by someone who knows the language and the market.

Taxes, shipping and payments

Selling outside Spain involves tax decisions that depend on your company, your volumes and the countries you sell to. Shopify calculates and displays taxes based on how you configure it, but what to configure is a decision for your tax advisor.

Shipping is set up by zones and rates for each market, and payment methods are enabled by country. We review with you which payment methods your customers use in each market so checkout doesn't fall short.

Frequently asked questions

What clients ask us most about international Shopify store.

Do I need one store per country?

Usually not. With Shopify Markets a single store sells in several countries with their own language, currency and prices. Several stores pay off when the catalog, team or brand changes by country.

How are taxes handled when selling abroad?

Shopify calculates taxes based on each market's settings, but what you have to declare and where depends on your situation. Review that with your tax advisor; we configure it according to their guidance.

Do translations affect SEO?

Yes, positively if they are complete: each language has its own URLs, titles and hreflang, and can rank in its country.

Can I have different prices in each country?

Yes. You can adjust prices by market with a percentage or set fixed prices per product, and round them to each currency's format.

Can I sell in several countries without Shopify Plus?

Yes. Shopify Markets is available on Shopify plans. Plus adds options such as several stores within the same organization, which help when each country needs its own store.

Can I hide products in certain countries?

Yes. You can decide which products are sold in each market, for example when a product can't be shipped to a given country.

Do customers see the store in their language automatically?

Shopify can show the language and currency based on the visitor's country, and we always add a visible selector so they can change it.

What if my store is already translated with another app?

We review it. If it works well we keep it; if it causes speed or SEO problems, we migrate the translations to Translate & Adapt or another better option.
