Shopify POS setup for your brick-and-mortar store

Shopify POS turns your physical store into one more location in your Shopify: same catalog, same stock, same customers. We set it up with you, from locations and inventory to staff, hardware and training for your store team.

This is for you if…

  • You have a physical store and an online store with stock that doesn't match
  • You use a point of sale system that doesn't talk to your Shopify
  • You are opening your first store or a pop-up shop
  • You want customers to buy online and pick up or return in store

What a Shopify POS setup includes

Everything needed so your first day at the register is just a normal day.

  • Locations and inventory unified with your online store
  • Staff, roles and permissions
  • Compatible hardware and app setup
  • In-store pickup and returns
  • Training for your store team

POS Lite or POS Pro

The basic features for selling in person are included in Shopify plans. POS Pro is a paid add-on per location that adds, among other things, staff roles and permissions, in-store inventory management and returns and exchanges at any store. We help you decide which locations need it; current prices are on Shopify's website.

Compatible hardware

Shopify POS runs on iPhone, iPad and Android devices. For a card reader, receipt printer, cash drawer and barcode scanner we point you to the Shopify Hardware Store, which lists what is compatible in Spain, and we set it up with you.

In-store and online sales, connected

Each physical store is an inventory location in Shopify, so online and in-store stock are visible in the same place. We set up in-store pickup for online orders and how returns of an online order are handled at the counter.

How we set up Shopify POS in your store

  1. How you sell today

Stores, registers, people, your current point of sale, how you reconcile stock and how returns work.

  2. Locations and inventory

We create each store as a location and load its real stock.

  3. Staff and permissions

Accounts for your store team and, with POS Pro, roles that define what each person can do.

  4. Hardware and testing

We connect the reader, printer and scanner and run test sales, exchanges and returns.

  5. Training and launch

We train your store team over video call and stay with you for the first few days.

What to decide before setting up Shopify POS

The decisions worth making before your first day at the register so your store and your website work together.

Unified inventory and locations

In Shopify every physical store, warehouse or point of sale is an inventory location. Stock is stored by location, and your online store can sell from the warehouse, the stores or both, depending on how you set up order fulfillment.

The key decision is which locations fulfill online orders. If a store ships online orders, its stock has to be up to date, and that changes how the store team works.

Staff, roles and permissions

Everyone who sells in the store needs access to POS. With POS Pro you can create roles and decide what each person can do: apply discounts, process returns or view reports.

If several people rotate through your store, roles prevent just anyone from issuing a refund or changing prices at the register.

  • Who can apply discounts
  • Who can issue refunds
  • Who can adjust inventory
  • Who can see the store's reports

In-store pickup and cross-channel returns

With in-store pickup, customers buy online and come by to collect their order. We set up which stores offer it, how customers are notified when it is ready and how the store team handles it.

Returns are the other side: a customer who bought online wants to return in store, or bought in one store and wants to exchange in another. Returns and exchanges at any store are a POS Pro feature, and we define how stock goes back to each location.

From your current point of sale to Shopify POS

If you are coming from another point of sale system, we review which of its data is worth bringing over: products and barcodes, customers and, if you need them, gift card balances. If you have an online store, the products will already be in Shopify, and what matters is that barcodes and SKUs match.

For payment hardware, printers and scanners, the reference is the Shopify Hardware Store. If you want the general picture of how POS works before deciding, it is in our guide to Shopify POS for physical stores.

Frequently asked questions

What clients ask us most about Shopify POS setup.

Do I need POS Pro?

It depends on how many people work in the store, whether you need to control what each one can do and whether you want returns and exchanges across stores. If the included features are enough, we don't switch it on.

Can I use my current card reader?

To take card payments integrated with Shopify POS you need one of the compatible readers Shopify sells for your country; your bank's card terminal doesn't connect to the app. You can keep using it separately and record that payment in POS as an external payment. We review what you have and tell you what you can keep.

How many physical stores can I connect?

Each store is an inventory location. On Basic, Grow and Advanced you can have up to 10 locations, and on Plus up to 200.

Do you come to the store to install it?

We work remotely. We prepare the configuration, guide you over video call while you connect the hardware and train your team the same way.

Can I take payments with my phone without a card reader?

Shopify POS supports Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android in the countries where it is available. We review with you whether it fits your sales volume or whether a reader makes more sense.

Can I use POS at trade shows or pop-up shops?

Yes. A pop-up shop or a trade show can be one more location, with its own stock.

Are in-store and online customers the same?

Yes. If the customer identifies themselves at the register, the sale is added to their profile alongside their online orders.

Do you train the store team?

Yes, as in all our projects: recorded video call sessions on payments, exchanges, returns and pickups.
