Two ways to sell with TikTok
The first is to use TikTok as a traffic channel: you make videos or ads, the user taps the link and buys in your Shopify store. It's the classic model, and what matters here is the pixel, the catalog for ads and a product page that converts well on mobile.
The second is TikTok Shop, the marketplace built into the app itself, where customers buy without leaving TikTok from a video, a livestream or the showcase on your profile. TikTok Shop launched in Spain in December 2024, and businesses established in Spain can register through its Seller Center. Since the conditions change often, confirm the current requirements and allowed categories in the Seller Center itself before you plan anything.
The TikTok app for Shopify
The connection is made with TikTok's official app in the Shopify App Store. From there you link your TikTok for Business account, install the pixel in one click and sync your products to use them in catalog ads. The app is free; what you pay for is the ad spend, which is billed to your TikTok ads account.
If you turn on TikTok Shop, the app also syncs products to your TikTok shop, and orders placed there appear in the Shopify admin so you can fulfill and ship them like any other. According to Shopify's help center, you can sell in livestreams, in videos with tagged products and in your profile showcase. When you connect it, check in the app that your country and account type show as available for TikTok Shop.
- TikTok for Business account and ads account
- TikTok pixel installed from the app
- Catalog synced for ads
- Optional: a TikTok Shop with orders flowing into Shopify
The pixel and measurement
Without a properly installed pixel, TikTok campaigns optimize blindly. The app connects it through Shopify's customer events integration, so it tracks page views, add to carts, checkout starts and purchases without you touching the theme code. If years ago you pasted a pixel by hand into theme.liquid, remove it so events aren't duplicated.
Just as with Meta, events must respect the cookie consent collected by your banner. Check in TikTok Events Manager that purchases arrive only once and with the correct value, and repeat the check every time you change themes or install an app that touches checkout.
What changes if you sell on TikTok Shop
TikTok Shop works as a marketplace with its own rules: commission per sale, required shipping times, return policies, product reviews and affiliate programs with creators who earn a commission on every sale they generate. All of that affects your margin and your operations, so run the numbers before you open.
It also changes who owns the customer relationship. On TikTok Shop, payment happens inside TikTok and you receive the data needed to ship the order, but the customer never goes through your store or your email flows. For many brands it makes sense to use TikTok Shop to acquire customers and then work on repeat purchases in their own store.
As for stock, syncing with Shopify prevents you from selling what you don't have, as long as inventory in Shopify is up to date. If you work with several locations or with made-to-order products, define clearly which location the stock shown on TikTok is allocated from.
Getting your store ready for TikTok traffic
A user arriving from TikTok comes from a video a few seconds long, almost always on a phone and with little patience. The product page has to load fast, show the product at the top exactly as it appeared in the video and keep the buy button visible without scrolling. A signup pop-up the moment they land tends to scare this traffic away.
Your checkout should offer fast payment options like Shop Pay, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and shipping costs should be visible before the last step. If you run campaigns with creators, prepare collection pages or campaign landing pages instead of sending all the traffic to the homepage.
Vertical images and videos matter too. If the catalog you sync only has square photos on white backgrounds, catalog ads look out of place in the feed. Adding a short vertical video to each key product improves both the ads and the product page itself.
Common mistakes
Opening TikTok Shop without calculating commissions and shipping costs, and finding out later that the lowest-priced products lose money. Connecting a catalog with products that have no vertical images or no description, which TikTok rejects or displays poorly. And measuring success only by the sales attributed in the TikTok dashboard, without checking in Shopify how many of those customers buy again.
- Calculate margin per product including TikTok Shop commissions
- Check for duplicate pixels after every theme change
- Keep Shopify inventory up to date
- Compare TikTok data with Shopify reports
