Too many Shopify apps: how to audit them and which ones to replace

It is common for a Shopify store to pile up apps over time, one for every need that came along. Each one adds a fee, a possible script on the storefront and one more vendor to depend on. This guide helps you review the ones you have, decide which you can replace with native features or theme code, and which are worth keeping.

Why you should review your apps

Apps are not a problem in themselves: many solve things that would be expensive to build. The problem is accumulation. Every app that shows something on the storefront loads its own code, and several together hurt speed, especially responsiveness to interactions on mobile.

On top of that, each app has access to part of your store data and its own update cycle. The more you have, the more likely it is that one stops working with your theme, changes its price or disappears.

How to run the audit

Start with a list of every installed app from the apps section of the admin. For each one, note what it does, who asked for it, how much it costs per month, whether it shows anything on the storefront and whether it is still used. You will be surprised to find old trial apps or duplicates.

Then review the technical impact. In the theme editor, under App embeds, you will see which apps inject code into the store. With your browser's developer tools you can see which external scripts load on each page and which domains they come from.

Also talk to the people who use each app day to day: customer service, logistics, marketing. Often an app is still installed only because nobody knows whether someone needs it, and a direct question settles it.

  • The job it does and whether another app does the same thing.
  • Monthly cost and usage charges.
  • Whether it loads scripts on the storefront and on which pages.
  • The data it has access to.
  • What would happen if you removed it tomorrow.

What Shopify already handles natively

Over the years Shopify has added features that used to require third-party apps. Before paying for one, check whether the admin or one of Shopify's own apps already covers it.

Automatic and code discounts, including buy one get one promotions, are in the admin. Collection filters, search synonyms and product recommendations are set up with Shopify's Search & Discovery app. Custom product fields are handled with metafields and metaobjects, with no extra fields apps. Translations are managed with Translate & Adapt and international selling with Shopify Markets.

Shopify also has its own apps for contact and lead capture forms, customer chat and sending simple email campaigns. They do not always match a specialized tool, but for many stores they are enough and integrate without extra theme code. Check what each one offers before deciding, because Shopify expands these features often.

What to replace with theme code

Many apps do simple visual things that a well built theme can handle with a custom section or block, with no external scripts and with the content editable from the theme editor or from metafields.

The advantage of moving it into the theme is that the code loads only where it is used, fits the store design and has no monthly fee. In exchange, someone has to build it and maintain it when you update the theme.

  • Announcement bars and free shipping messages.
  • Size guides, tabs and accordions on the product page.
  • Warranty, shipping and returns icons.
  • Sticky buy button on mobile.
  • FAQs and content blocks per product.

Which apps are worth keeping

Some features depend on processes outside the theme, and a specialized app handles them better than a custom build. Reviews are a good example: requesting feedback after delivery, moderating, showing photos and generating rating markup takes a complete system.

The same goes for subscriptions, which involve recurring billing and customer account management, and for invoicing, where it matters that invoices comply with Spanish regulations and integrate with your accounting. For email marketing a dedicated tool is usually worth it too.

How to remove apps without breaking anything

Before touching anything, duplicate your live theme so you have a copy to go back to. First turn off the app embed in the theme editor and watch the store for a few days; if nobody misses anything, uninstall it.

Modern apps, which work with app blocks and app embeds, are removed without leaving a trace in the theme. Older ones sometimes edited files and left behind code snippets, script calls in theme.liquid or stray styles. Review and remove them by hand, and check that no blank gaps are left on your pages.

Keep things tidy over time

Set a simple rule: no app gets installed without knowing what problem it solves, who will review it and what would happen if it were removed. Repeat the audit from time to time, especially before peak sales seasons.

If you want to move app features into your theme, at Weblineo we build them custom and in code. The code stays in your store and belongs to you, and after launch we support you for 30 days to adjust whatever is needed.

Frequently asked questions

How many apps are too many on Shopify?

There is no fixed number. What matters more is how many load code on the storefront, whether they overlap and whether each one is really used.

Does uninstalling an app delete its data?

It depends on the app. Data it saved in Shopify, like tags or metafields, usually stays; data stored on its own servers may be lost. Export anything important first.

Does a free app affect speed?

Yes, if it loads scripts on the storefront. Price has nothing to do with its technical impact.

What do I do if a gap appears on the page after removing an app?

It is usually a code snippet the app left in the theme. You need to find it in the theme files and delete it, or restore the theme copy and repeat the process carefully.
